Area Information

Spanish explorer, Melchlor Diaz, discovered this area in 1540, years before Mayflower landed on the East Coast. In 1776, Father Francisco Garcés crossed the Colorado River here nearly a month before the Declaration of independence was signed.

William Harrison Hardy, who worked as a postmaster, county supervisor and a member of the Territorial Legislature, was one of the first men to call this area his home in the 1860s. The town was originally known as "Hardyville." When the railroad bypassed the town, it quickly became a ghost town until the construction of the Davis Dam. The name "Bullhead City" is taken from Bull's Head Rock, a rock formation along the Colorado River that steamboats on the Colorado River used as a navigation point.

We receive six inches of rain per year and 37 inches of snowfall. The number of days with any measurable precipitation is 24. On average, we have 285 sunny days annually. The July high is around 112 degrees while the January low is 44.

The Bullhead City Elementary School District operates our elementary and junior high schools. The Colorado River Union High School District offers Mojave and River Valley high schools.

Laughlin/Bullhead International Airport makes its home across the river just outside of town.

When you come to Bullhead City, you will never be lacking in things to see and do. Enjoy water sports, hiking, off-road vehicle sports, hunting, exploring ghost towns, rockhounding, prospecting and more. The Colorado River Recreation Area extends from Yuma, Arizona to Lake Powell, about 650 miles.

The Tropicana Express Hotel and Casino hosts the Talent Quest National Finals, where qualifying singers compete for the top spot in Male and Female Pop/Rock/R&B and Male and Female Country/Western categories.

We have the advantage of existing in two time zones at the end of the year. Revelers are known to ring in the New Year in Bullhead City and then cross the river into Laughlin to ring it in again.

The Laughlin River Run started in 1983 and now is billed as the "West Coast's Largest Motorcycle Event on the Banks of the Colorado River," with thousands of avid motorcyclist attending each spring.

This is a true modern-day desert oasis! Stop by our United Country offices and let us show you around.
